"Date Jar" Gallery Pot

Our "Date Jar" is the first in a series of Gallery Pot projects that we will be giving you that lets you turn ordinary terra-cotta into something very special. The techniques can be used on a variety of other terra-cotta pots, but we especially love using the Tunisian Pots since the ancient, yet classic shapes lend themselves to the "antiqued" finishes that these projects produce.

"Date Jar" Tunisian Pot (#19422)
.
"Linen Bark", 1 oz., Bleached (#59998)
.
"Glueter" (white glue / water mixture see "Tips" to prepare)
.
Acrylic paints, shades of khaki, brown, greens
.
Paint brush, 2" bristle

1.
To soften Linen Bark and make pliable, wet it and squeeze out excess water.
2.
Cut off stiff outer edges, then tear the Linen Bark into 2" - 4" pieces, using your fingers to stretch and tear the textile into interesting shapes
3.
One at a time, dip the pieces of Linen Bark into the "glueter" mixture, squeeze out excess, and arrange the pieces onto the Date Jar, manipulating the textile into a design you like.
4.
Allow to dry overnight
5.
Using your paint brush (or a sponge) dampen the entire pot (this is to prevent the paints from just being instantly "sucked up" by the dry terra-cotta)
6.
Pour small amounts of your acrylic paints into paint bowls, and have a large jar (I save all my pickle jars) of clean water handy.
7.
Start with small dabs of paint on the dampened surface, using your clean water to "wash" the color down the Date Jar.
8.
Keep working with your different colors and the water until you have the look you want.
9.
Allow to dry overnight.
10.
If desired, you can add an acrylic sealer. These come in everything from matte to high gloss, and a few in-betweens (this is a good idea if the piece will be handled much, since moisture can reactivate the "stickiness" of the glue on the Linen Bark).
11. Enjoy your new creation!

1.
"Glueter" is our term for our "glue / water" mixture. Water soluble white glue is mixed with water (in this case about 70 % glue, 30 % water). That's it, now you have "glueter"!
2.
You can, of course, use this same technique on any terra-cotta pot, including the common flowerpot, available at any garden center.
